Medium Density Fibreboard should be stored indoors, flat, dry, and fully supported, preferably at stable room conditions. MDF is commonly manufactured at about 8% ±3% moisture content, while changes in surrounding humidity can change its dimensions even without contact with liquid water. A 1% moisture-content increase can produce roughly 0.05% movement in length or width and about 0.35% movement through the thickness. A 600 mm MDF component exposed to conditions ranging from about 35% to 85% relative humidity can change by roughly 1.5 mm across its width. Keep sheets raised from floors, protect all edges from water, and condition panels before accurate cutting or finishing.

MDF behaves differently from plastic or metal sheet because its wood fibres continue to exchange moisture with surrounding air after manufacturing. European technical guidance states that MDF commonly leaves production at around 8% moisture content, with a normal variation of approximately ±3%. A single exposed sheet may approach the moisture level of a new environment within several days, while panels buried in the middle of a large stack can require several weeks.

That difference in conditioning speed is one reason MDF should not move from a cold delivery vehicle straight to precision machining. If the warehouse is around 10°C and the production room is close to 20°C, the outside faces and edges begin adapting first. Allowing the pack to stabilize before CNC routing, drilling, veneering, laminating, or close-tolerance assembly reduces dimensional differences between machining and final use.

Flat storage is usually preferred because the weight of a sheet can slowly produce curvature when support is uneven. A standard 2440 × 1220 × 18 mm MDF sheet can weigh about 40 kg, so a stack of 25 sheets may approach 1,000 kg before pallets or packaging are counted. West Fraser storage guidance calls for a rigid, flat base, weather protection and adequate ventilation.

Support also needs to be distributed rather than concentrated at two distant points. Uniform timber bearers should be the same thickness and positioned in straight lines beneath the pack; when several MDF packs are stacked, bearer positions should line up vertically. A floor slope of no more than about 2° is recommended in West Fraser safety guidance, because uneven bases can place a large stack under continuous bending stress.

A storage arrangement can be checked with a few measurable conditions:

  • Keep MDF completely clear of rain, standing water and wet floors.

  • Use dry pallets, racks or bearers rather than placing boards on concrete.

  • Keep bearer thickness consistent across the full pack.

  • Avoid prolonged storage beside heaters, loading doors or steam sources.

  • Inspect corners and exposed edges whenever packaging is damaged.

  • Keep 18 mm sheets supported well enough that their own weight does not create visible sag.

Moisture control requires more than preventing leaks. MDF responds to relative humidity, so a warehouse can remain physically dry while the boards still gain moisture from humid air. Technical testing of MDF dimensional stability commonly compares material conditioned at 35% relative humidity and 25°C with material conditioned at 85% relative humidity and 25°C. Those conditions represent a substantial change in service environment and show why warehouse humidity affects machining tolerances.

At roughly 35% relative humidity, MDF may have an equilibrium moisture content near 6%; around 85% relative humidity, it can approach about 13%. The approximate 7-percentage-point difference is large enough to affect fitted doors, cabinet parts, routed profiles and panels installed between fixed surfaces. A board should therefore be machined as close as practical to the moisture conditions expected during use.

Dimensional movement is small compared with solid timber, but it is large enough to matter in furniture manufacturing. Industry guidance gives an approximate in-plane movement of 0.05% for every 1% change in MDF moisture content, compared with up to 0.5% tangential movement in solid wood. Through the thickness, MDF movement can reach roughly 0.35% for each 1% change in moisture content.

Consider a 600 mm-wide, 15 mm-thick door panel. A moisture-content increase of 5 percentage points may increase its width by around 1.5 mm and thickness by about 0.3 mm. A cabinet shop working with 1 mm or smaller clearances therefore cannot treat warehouse moisture as an unrelated storage issue; panel condition needs to suit the manufacturing tolerances used later.

Water exposure needs a separate rule because high humidity and liquid soaking do not produce the same level of damage. EN 622-5, published in 2009, includes 24-hour thickness-swelling requirements for different MDF thickness classes. For standard general-purpose MDF, specified maximum swelling values vary with thickness; boards over 12 mm and up to 19 mm, for example, have a 12% requirement under the stated test method. The figure is a product test requirement, not an acceptable warehouse water exposure level.

Moisture-resistant MDF also needs dry storage. The term describes improved performance under humid conditions, not permission to store sheets outdoors in rain. EN 622-5 distinguishes standard MDF from MDF.H products intended for humid conditions, with separate physical-property requirements. Even moisture-resistant boards can develop damaged edges, staining, surface changes or dimensional problems after prolonged wetting.

For the same reason, waterproof wrapping cannot compensate for a wet pack. If rain enters torn packaging during transport, sealing the pack tightly afterward may slow moisture release. Inspect the bottom sheets, corners and edges before long-term storage, and separate wet panels from dry stock rather than burying them under new material.

MDF that looks dry on the face can still have a moisture difference between its outer layers, edges and centre after transport or storage. Conditioning time depends on sheet thickness, stack size, airflow and the difference between the previous and new environment.

Vertical storage needs more control than simply leaning sheets against a wall. An 18 mm full-size sheet weighing around 40 kg places its own weight on the lower edge while the unsupported centre remains under bending stress. A vertical rack should restrain the board over a broad area, keep the lower edge secure and reduce the lean angle. Long-term stock is generally easier to keep flat when stored horizontally.

Surface cleanliness matters at the same scale as moisture control. One screw, offcut or piece of hardened debris trapped beneath a stack weighing several hundred kilograms can leave a localized indentation. Before adding sheets, clean the supporting surface and remove sawdust from between decorative panels, especially when boards will later receive high-gloss paint, thin veneer or laminate.

Stock rotation also reduces long residence times under poor conditions. A warehouse carrying 6 mm, 12 mm, 18 mm and 25 mm MDF should identify thickness, grade, arrival date and intended application rather than relying only on visual appearance. Moisture-resistant, fire-performance, lightweight and standard MDF can look similar after packaging has been removed.

Storage planning can also cover related panels when a distributor or furniture factory carries several engineered wood products. MDF, OSB, particleboard and 3 Layer Plywood should not automatically share identical handling assumptions because their structures, moisture responses, densities and edge behaviour differ. Product labels and supplier storage instructions should remain attached to each batch until it reaches production.

Fire safety belongs in the storage plan as well. MDF is a combustible wood-based product, and large quantities create substantial combustible mass in one area. Keep packs away from flames, sparks and concentrated heating equipment. Routine inspection can be short but measurable. Check stored material after roof leaks, HVAC failures, loading-door exposure or any period when warehouse relative humidity has remained unusually high. Measure suspicious boards at several positions rather than checking one face only, because moisture uptake starts faster at exposed edges and upper sheets before progressing toward the centre of the stack.

Before production, compare current board condition with the room where machining or installation will occur. EN 622-5 property values, apart from specified exceptions such as swelling tests, are characterized around 20°C and 65% relative humidity, providing a useful standardized reference condition rather than a universal warehouse setting. Production facilities working under substantially different conditions should follow the panel manufacturer's conditioning guidance.

For long storage periods, records can include arrival date, supplier, board grade, thickness, storage location and inspection history. A pack received in 2026 and left unopened for months may have experienced very different seasonal humidity from a pack delivered only several days earlier. Tracking dates makes it easier to decide which pack requires inspection or conditioning before precision processing.

A well-managed MDF store therefore relies on measurable conditions rather than appearance alone: dry contact surfaces, level support, controlled humidity exposure, protected edges and enough conditioning time before machining. When moisture shifts from about 6% to 13%, or ambient relative humidity moves from roughly 35% to 85%, dimensional movement is already large enough to affect fitted furniture and finished components. Keeping the board flat and dry before the first cut costs far less material than correcting swollen, bowed or poorly fitting parts afterward.
